Letter From the President of Miami-Jacobs Career College:
On June 10th of this year, 900 Miami-Jacobs students will cross their personal finish line as they celebrate graduation at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. We will cheer for them and smile with them knowing that they have overcome challenges and difficult circumstances. These students took a bold step in their decision to work toward a new life and a new career, and they will prevail.
Several recent, misinformed news stories have negatively impacted our students, graduates and employers, and I would like to set the record straight.
Miami-Jacobs Career College is approved to teach our nearly 2500 students in all of our 21 different programs across our five campuses in Dayton, Troy, Springboro, Columbus and Sharonville. Our students are eligible to sit for certification exams and become employed in their field. In fact, we have been offering health care education since 1974 and have trained and placed over 3,000 health care professionals in our region.
Our graduates contribute to the success of their employers and the fabric of their communities. They are to be congratulated. For our students graduating in June, those who will graduate in the future, their families, employers and future employers, it is important that the record be set straight.
Here are the facts:
- We have over 400 qualified faculty and staff members who dedicate their careers so students can achieve.
- Miami-Jacobs Career College is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) to award certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees.
- ACICS is a nationally recognized accrediting agency by the United States Department of Education and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. The accreditation has been in place since 1957.
- Miami-Jacobs is also approved to offer Associate Degrees by the Ohio Board of Regents.
- The Miami-Jacobs Career College Surgical Technology Associate Degree program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) on recommendation of the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Surgical Technology.
- Our Practical Nursing program has obtained conditional approval by the Ohio Board of Nursing. Over the next year, Miami-Jacobs will be actively working with the Nursing Board to address their concerns and enhance our Practical Nursing Program to earn the Nursing Board’s final approval of our license application. In March, the nursing board voted to revoke our conditional approval but has given us a chance to participate in a hearing to demonstrate that we have met their criteria. We are working with our attorneys, and they have helped us hire an external consultant who is providing support to the program administrator in all areas of compliance. Internally, we have made the decision to not admit additional students until the board has communicated that they are satisfied with our plans.
In the upcoming months, Miami-Jacobs Career College will continue to work diligently on the accreditation and approval requirements which warrant attention but do not prevent our current students from achieving their goals and success. We will keep making a place for students who are looking for a better future and life for themselves and their families and we will continue to educate and train them to the best of our abilities.
One hundred and fifty years ago, much of higher education frowned on female students, and Miami-Jacobs Career College was founded to make a place for them. When higher education did not understand the needs of struggling students, we reached out to them. Over the years when markets shifted and we entered tough times, we led the charge by providing education and training to meet the changing needs of the marketplace and employers.
Thank you to our graduates for demonstrating professionalism in their careers, our community for embracing them, our students who entrust us with their education and training and our faculty, staff and partners who work hard every day to help our students change their futures and their lives and those of their families by pursuing a successful and rewarding career.
Sincerely,
Darlene R. Waite, President
